The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected fake official of the Nigerian Prisons Service.

The suspect, who gave his name as Kingsley Anukwocha, was arrested on Zik Avenue in Uwani area of the state, on Sunday.

It was learnt that operatives of the Uwani Police Division picked Anukwocha during their routine stop and search.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident. He told PUNCH Metro that the suspect had claimed to be a prisons official and had presented an identity card to deceive the police officers.

“But he was forced to confess that he was not a prisons officer when the interrogation became too much,” said Amaraizu.

He said the suspect confessed that he had been using the fake identity card to beat security checks.

In a related development, the PPRO said on Sunday that the Uwani Police Division had smashed a notorious armed robbery gang.

He said the incident occurred along Amigbo Lane, opposite College of Immaculate Conception gate, Uwani in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.

He said, “Police operatives, working on information from members of the public, on Saturday, at about 6.am, intercepted a Hyundai taxi cab with number plate ENU 33 BX. The vehicle was conveying three armed men suspected to be robbers. As operatives tried to stop the cab, they jumped out and fired at the policemen who returned fire. Two of the suspects were arrested, while the remaining suspect escaped with bullet wound.”

The police spokesman said the two wounded suspects were taken to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital for medical attention, where they later died.

Amaraizu said, “Some of the items recovered from the gang are a double-barrel gun, three locally made pistols, three live cartridges and two expended cartridges.

“Investigations into the incident have commenced and the command is appealing to members of the public, particularly hospital operators, to report anyone with bullet wounds promptly to the police.”
