A 10-year-old boy was on Wednesday reported missing in a boat mishap along the Five Cowrie Creek at Falomo, in Lagos.

The Managing Director, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr Olayinka Marinho, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident happened at about 6:10 a.m.
Marinho explained that the incident involved an EIFFEL pro-craft boat operator and a private boat operator.

“Casualty reports showed that a boy of 10 was missing after an accident between a fisherman’s canoe and a boat in the early hours of this morning, due to speeding.

“A fisherman and his son were fishing in their canoe when the speed boat hit them and ran away.

“We rescued the father, while the son was missing. However, the father gave us the information that led to the arrest of the boat and the operator.

“The incident has been reported at the Marine Police Station, Ikoyi, with both parties involved handed over to the police,” Marinho said.

He said that the police authorities and local divers were still searching for the boy’s remains.

Reacting to the Tuesday boat mishap at Sabokoji, an Island opposite the Apapa Port, Marinho said that it could be as a result of the ripple effects of a larger vessel that departed the port.

“The investigation revealed that the boat may have capsized due to the ripple effects of the waves from larger vessels leaving the port area.

“We will continue to enforce the proper usage of life jackets and enlighten water users on the need to be mindful of larger vessels in that axis.

“LASWA will also continue to enforce the speed limit of 6-knots along the Five Cowries Creek zone, due to the commercial activities going on there, to forestall further mishaps,” he said.

Marinho said that the authority was still in search of the missing bodies from the Tuesday mishap.

He also said that the authority had yet to ascertain the actual number of people on board the boat.
