Nigerian railway moves 1million litres of fuel daily

The Federal Government has said over one million litres of fuel is being transported daily through the rejuvenated railway system in the country.

The government also said that over 30,000 rail passengers were transported in two months while over 200 communities were currently connected by rail.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Mr. Joe Abah, said this in Abuja on Wednesday during the inauguration of a 24-member committee on Public Service Reforms chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Pius Anyim.

Abah is to serve as the secretary of the committee.

He attributed the feat to massive reforms in critical sectors of the economy.

He outlined the mandate of the committee as the provision of technical leadership for reform at the level of planning, design and implementation; initiation of action on reform at different fronts and monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the reforms for impact and effectiveness.

Others include generating feedback information to guide periodic review; interacting with donor agencies/stakeholders and informing the Federal Executive Council on reform implementation efforts on a regular basis; and briefing the National Council on Reform quarterly.

In his response, Anyim said the absence of the Steering Committee on Reforms had limited the government’s capacity to provide coordinated technical leadership and effective monitoring and evaluation of all public service reform efforts.

He said this was why President Goodluck Jonathan deemed it fit to reconstitute the committee to give the reform of public services “the impetus that it needs.”

He said President Jonathan had underscored the importance of the public service to his administration’s transformation agenda, especially as it was often through the public service that a government could directly touch the lives of its citizens.

Anyim said, “The electoral system is now more credible, trains are running again for the first time in decades, the power sector has finally been unbundled after various previous attempts, the banking industry has become more professional and we are witnessing massive infrastructural development across the country.

“In terms of its direct impact on the lives of citizens, these reforms are perhaps unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. They go to the roots of the problems that have slowed our development.”
