Confusion erupted yesterday at the Wurukum area of Makurdi in Benue State when a final year female student of the Benue State University (BSU) was discovered dead in a hotel room.

The deceased, identified as Joann Adaaku, is a 400 level student of Economics Department of BSU was said to have given up the ghost few hours after she lodged at Savannah Guest House, located beside the low level roundabout, in the state capital.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the circumstances that led to the mysterious death of the female student were yet to be unravelled. The incident occurred a day after the institution reopened from the prolonged nationwide ASUU strike.

It was alleged that the deceased, who lived with her parents, had told them she was going out to pray before she later checked into the hotel. Another version said she told her parents that she was going to the hostel.

However, a source at the hotel who begged for anonymity, said the lady went to her room with a bottle of water and a canned malt drink.  The source said she remained confined in her room for over four hours without receiving a visitor.

“The situation created suspicion and a staff of the hotel went to check on her. He knocked on her door at about 11pm and when there was no response they forced the door open and saw her lying on her side. The hotel management called in the police who took snap shots of her corpse and transported her to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) where she was certified dead.”

The police public relations officer, Daniel Ezeala, who confirmed the incident, said investigation into the matter is still ongoing. He said the command would brief the media as soon as soon as a post-mortem is carried out.
