PDP insists Jonathan didn’t sign agreement for one term

AS the country marches towards the 2015 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party has insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan never signed any agreement to serve only one term in office.

The Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, told journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday that the President would contest next year’s presidential poll.

Secondus explained that Jonathan was free to run in 2015, based on the provisions of the country’s constitution.

“I am not aware of any agreement that President Jonathan entered into with anyone or group in 2011 that he will only serve as President for one term. I have also not seen any agreement. No one or group has been able to produce such a document. The PDP has no knowledge of such a document,” he said.

On the controversy surrounding some oil wells in Rivers State, Secondus stated that issues bordering on oil wells were not discussed through debates in the media, but through the courts.

He said, “The matter is in court. So, I cannot offer any further comment on that. But Governor Rotimi Amaechi should stop playing politics with the issue of Soku oil wells.

“Amaechi has been politicising the issue of the Soku oil wells. The issue of Soku oil wells cannot be settled on the pages of newspapers.”

On the move being made by the PDP to bring back former members to its fold, Secondus said that the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, had been reaching out to Amaechi and others.

He added that Amaechi would automatically become the leader of the PDP if he (Amaechi) agreed to come back to the party’s fold.

Secondus, however, insisted that the defection of former PDP governors would not affect the fortunes of the ruling party.

“The governors, like every other Nigerian, have one vote. The governors do not keep the votes of those who will vote in the villages and towns in their states in their respective government houses.

“They vote on election day like any other voter. So, we should not give a man the powers that he does not deserve,” the PDP deputy national chairman said.

Also, the Rivers State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Felix Obuah, said the President deserved a second term in office, having performed well in his first tenure.

Obuah said, “The coast is very clear for President Jonathan to run for a second term because he has performed well during his first term. We in Rivers State are waiting for President Jonathan to declare his interest for a second term and we will give him our unalloyed support.”
