The Borno State government yesterday closed 85 Government Secondary Schools in the state as a result of incessant attacks by the Boko Haram sect in the region.

Governor Kashim Shettima who disclosed this yesterday, also told the Hausa Service of the BBC that it was pertinent to close the schools to protect the lives and properties of innocent students as well as the school properties in the state.

Shettima said, “The schools are to remain closed until security situation in the state improves,” the governor said.

Boko Haram had attacked schools in the North East leading to the shutting down of five Federal Unity Colleges in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states by the federal government.

The affected schools are Federal Government Girls College, Munguno and Federal Science and Technical College, Lassa in Borno; Federal Government College, Potiskum and Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe, as well as Federal Science and Technical College, Michika, Adamawa.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has again set up an 8-man Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North to engage Boko Haram in dialogue and design a framework for resolving the violence.

Chairman of the committee and minister of special duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, told the BBC that the new committee set by the president will secretly conduct its activities and develop mechanisms to address the underlying causes of insurgencies to prevent future occurrences.
