Former militants in the Niger Delta region yesterday began a three-day fasting and payers for God’s intervention in the efforts to rescue the over 200 girls kidnapped from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, as well as for the security and political stability of the country.

The fasting programme, which is being attended by former freedom fighters from all parts of the Niger Delta region, is organised by the Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative (LPCDI) and the Presidential Amnesty Office.

Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, president of LPCDI, General Reuben Wilson, said the prayer session, which is holding at the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, will end on Democracy Day, May 29, 2014, pointing out that the programme was meant to attract God’s attention on the plight of the abducted girls.

Wilson said, “It is meant to draw God’s attention to the plight of the abducted girls and the heated political climate in the country. After the prayer on Thursday, the former militants will hit the streets of Yenagoa for what they call a peace rally, meant to pressurise the insurgents to release the girls and to stop the spate of killings and bombings in parts of the country.”
