The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State University, Students Union Government, Mr Adekoya Joseph has called on the Lagos State government to make the reductions in school fees in naira and kobo and not in percentage.

Speaking on Rubbin’ Minds, alongside the president of the Union, Nurudeen Yusuf, he noted that “when the fees was to be increased, the government came out to tell us how much we will be paying in naira and kobo” but “when they came out to announce the reduction, they announced the reduction in percentage” insisting that “this has created a lot of confusion” adding that what we are saying is the reduction should be announced in naira and kobo”

He said that the 34-60 per cent reduced by the government is still very high “because with the present reduction, a medical student will still be paying 250, 000 naira, a science student will be paying about 198, 000 naira” adding that “the lowest paying student of LASU, that is a student of Arts, will be paying 127,500 naira.

He said they had given Governor Babtunde Fashola a proposal of what they can be able to afford and “after meeting with the general student populace we came up with a proposal on how much we can pay; we came up with 46, 500 naira and 65, 500.

“So it is outrageous for the government to come out and tell us they have announced a 34-60 per cent reduction” insisting that “what we are saying is that the government should give us what we want”.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), on Thursday announced the reversal of LASU tuition fee to N25, 000.

Fashola, who said he had earlier met with the state executive council over the issue, ordered that the old rate takes immediate effect.

The new auditorium of LASU which held the grand finale of its 19th convocation reverberated with joy at the announcement.

Security and protocol officers found it difficult controlling the jubilant students who danced round the institution.

Unable to control their excitement, some of them breached the protocol, rushed to the podium and prostrated before the governor as a show of appreciation.

The news which soon filtered across the campus saw students embrace and gave handshake to one another. Many of them huddled up in groups under the Abe Igi, a popular students’ meeting point, discussing the development.

Announcing the reversal, Fashola thanked the Students’ Union for their maturity and civility ever since they commenced protests to compel government to reverse the  fee which was jerked up from N25,000 to between N193,000 to N350,000 three years ago.

“I want to appreciate the maturity of our students in the way they went about their agitation for reduction in their school fees. In the course of their protests, I invited them and they responded and we both arrived at a decision where the students submitted a position paper on what they feel should be recommended as fees. We looked at their (students’) position papers, and the adjustment they recommended and made appropriate reduction of between 34 to 60 per cent.

FRESH facts on what led to the decision to increase tuition fees at the Lagos State University may be emerging as the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said the decision was reached after the students besieged the Lagos State House of Assembly, demanding for something to be done about the deplorable situation at the institution.

Fashola, who was playing host in Ikeja yesterday to leaders of the National Associations of Nigerian Students‎ (NANS) told the leadership of student unions across the country to brace up for future leadership roles in the country.

While calling on students’ body in the country to change its style of pressing home its demands, the governor pledged to always pursue policies that would enhance the standard of education.

“We didn’t just wake up one day and decided to increase the tuition of the school but it was you the students who protested to the State House of Assembly to complain over the state of the school. And based on your complaints, we acted accordingly.

“Part of the recommendation by the visitation panel was that the tuition of the school should be increased for the progress of the school.”
