Soldiers set BRT's on FIRE in LAGOS
« on: July 04, 2014, 02:03:26 PM »

Eye-witness said the incident happened when the BRT driver changed his lane and accidentally knocked down the soldier on a bike.

The soldier’s death has not been confirmed by any government authority.

As a result of that, some soldiers gathered at the scene along Ikorodu Road, stopping all BRT buses and destroying some of them.

Aside from the buses that were set ablaze, some persons were beaten-up mercilessly by the soldiers who set one of the buses on fire

If a soldier killed a civilian,it is a common thing. When a soldier die all hell is let loose. As seen today on Ikorodu Road. What a country we have, when those who supposed to protect the citizen turn against them. When shall we grow up against jungle justice especially perpetrated by law enforcers.

The worst thing that happen to a country is a weak and corrupt government and a military that lacks discipline.
NIGERIA is a perfect example of such a country.

LAGBUS Asset Management Limited, operators of BRT buses have denied that one of their buses killed a soldier. Soldiers went on a rampage yesterday around the Palmgrove area of Lagos, stopping BRT buses, asking passengers to get down, beating the drivers, destroying the buses before eventually setting them on fire. The damage yesterday is said to be worth over N100million.

But speaking about it, a LAGBUS official said they had nothing to do with it, explaining that they only found a corpse in their bus and went to report it to the police;

"By 10 p.m. last night, one of our buses broke down at Onipanu; by 11 p.m., a rescue team with a van went to the scene to tow the bus. Unfortunately, area boys started stoning our team which made our men to leave. Meanwhile, the driver put on hazard lights and C- Caution to alert motorists of the breakdown. Continue...

“By 5am this morning, before the rescue team got to the scene, a corpse had been deposited in our bus and a motorcycle parked behind it.

“When we saw it, we reported the case to the Pedro Police Station, Somolu, but before we got back to the scene, soldiers had burnt down five BRT buses and one belonging to LAGBUS.

BRT buses were later withdrawn from the roads yesterday to prevent more damages. The man who died was an army corporal. http://lindaikeji.blogspot.com/2014/07/brt-bus-did-not-kill-any-soldier-lagbus.html

Speaking at the inaugural sitting on Monday, chairman of the tribunal, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo (rtd), promised that the tribunal would not be biased in its work and would rather concentrate on establishing the true position of events.

The tribunal of inquiry set up by Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, to investigate the 4th July rampage waged upon drivers of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and soldiers held its first sitting on Monday in Lagos.

On 4th July, soldiers in Lagos were reported to have unleashed mayhem on the Palmgroove part of the city, in protest of the death of a fellow soldier who was allegedly hit by the driver of a Bus Rapid Transit (bus).

An eyewitness told SaharaReporters then that after the soldier died, other soldiers took to vandalising BRT buses and harassing their drivers.

“Any BRT bus that they could lay their hands on, they set it on fire. I don’t think the buses they burnt were less than seven. You needed to see the flames that went up in the air,” he said.

“The BRT ticket sellers and their other workers were not spared as well. I’m sure some of them have never been beaten in their lives the way they were beaten this morning.”

The Nigerian Army released a statement to deny that soldiers went on rampage, saying instead that hoodlums were the ones who took advantage of the situation to perpetrate violence.

On 21st July, Fashola inaugurated a three-man tribunal of inquiry to examine the cause of the incident in order to forestall a repeat.

Speaking at the inaugural sitting on Monday, chairman of the tribunal, Justice Ebenezer Adebajo (rtd), promised that the tribunal would not be biased in its work and would rather concentrate on establishing the true position of events.
