U.S. health officials are monitoring the Ebola outbreak in Africa but say the risk of the deadly germ spreading to the United States is remote.

The Centers for Disease Control on Monday sent a health alert to U.S. doctors about the outbreak. There are no travel restrictions to the West Africa region hit by the disease. But last month, the CDC issued a mid-level travel advisory for health workers.

Two American aid workers in Liberia have tested positive for the virus and are being treated there. The family of one worker — a doctor — recently returned to the U.S. for a visit. The CDC said they are fine. BusinessWeek

The second American infected with Ebola while in Liberia is expected to arrive in Atlanta for treatment on Tuesday, according to SIM USA, the faith-based charity where the woman volunteered.

Nancy Writebol, 59 years old, who had been helping decontaminate workers at an Ebola center, is in serious but stable condition, according to the Charlotte, N.C.-based group. She will be flown in an ambulance jet from Liberia to Dobbins Air Reserve Base outside of Atlanta and then driven in a specially equipped ambulance with a law-enforcement escort to Emory University Hospital.

At Emory, she will be placed in an isolation unit near Kent Brantly, a 33-year-old doctor from Texas who was infected at the same Liberian clinic where the two worked. Dr. Brantly was brought to Emory on Saturday.
