The Blues sold the Belgian striker to Everton, with whom he scored 15 league goals last season, for £28 million after signing Diego Costa and bringing back Didier Drogba. After two successful season-long loan spells at West Brom and Everton, Romelu Lukaku has finally left Chelsea on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old joins the Toffees for £28 million, becoming their record signing and ending a spell at Stamford Bridge that began with a much-talked about move from Anderlecht as an 18-year-old.

Lukaku was tipped to be Drogba's heir but played only 10 league games for the Blues, appearing eight times in his debut season before being shipped out on loan to play more regular football.

Despite his lack of appearances in a Chelsea shirt, the Blues will pocket a profit on their investment and the sale will provide some relief when it comes to meeting Uefa's Financial Fair Play requirements.

That was a factor in convincing Chelsea to sell, Jose Mourinho has admitted, while tension always seemed to exist between the Portuguese coach and Lukaku.

“The thinking was, first of all, the fact that Romelu was always very clear with us that in his mentality and his approach he was not highly motivated to come to a competitive situation at Chelsea,” Mourinho said.

“He wanted to play for Chelsea but clearly only as the first choice striker - and at a club of our dimension it’s very difficult to promise a player that status.”
