Ex-Policeman kills wife and commits suicide in Abeokuta

The Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, said it would unravel the circumstance that prompted a 60-year-old retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sunday Isokpehi, to shoot himself and his 40-year-old wife, Gladys, to death.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who stated this while reacting to the tragic incident, said the Command would investigate whether or not the late Police officer legally acquired the double-barrelled gun he used to perpetrate the crime.
The late Isokpehi was reported to have shot his wife to death on Saturday after returning to their home in Ota area of the state after accusing her of being drunk, and shortly after killed himself.
Adejobi said contrary to reports that late Isokpehi was a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, the officer retired as Assistant Superintendent of Police, adding that he did not kill his son.
He said: “We are still investigating the immediate and remote causes of the tragic incident. We will find out whether the man was depressed or was under any influence, because a normal human being will not open fire on his wife and then kill himself.
“We will investigate how he got the double-barrelled gun he used to commit the dastardly act.”
He said Isokpehi retired in March from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit, Lagos Police Command, and was living in Eledi area in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government.
220 robbers arrested
Meantime, the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, has said that no fewer than 220 armed robbers were arrested, saying 37 others were killed during shootout with police while 48 guns, which include 10 AK-47 rifles and 1,600 ammunition were recovered within nine months.
Okoye said this while briefing newsmen, yesterday, on the success recorded by the command between January and September.
Narrating other achievements, Okoye stated that 116 vehicles were recovered, while 92 suspected cultists were arrested.
Making reference to the recent arrest made on Saturday by his men, he said 31 suspected cultists, who belonged to Eye Confraternity, were arrested in a hotel at Obantoko area of Abeokuta, during their initiation ceremony.
He said: “Based on an intelligence report, our men swung into action and 31 of the suspected cultists were arrested. The banner, berets and T-shirts used during their initiation were recovered.”
Some of the suspects, who spoke to Vanguard, said they were innocent.
