W’leaders to discuss Nigeria’s endemic polio at UN summit

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has arrived New York, United States to participate in this year’s United Nations General Assembly summit and several other side events where issues relating to Nigeria will take centre stage.

For instance, the issue of endemic polio in Nigeria would be a main focus, bringing world leaders and prominent individuals, including Bill Gates, to see how Nigeria can be helped. Nigeria is one of the three countries in the world, where polio transmission has never stopped, according to the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

Also, one of Nigeria’s poverty alleviation schemes will be on display at the UN headquarters this week to showcase the success of the Federal Government in the acceleration of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to other countries.

Among the main characteristics of the UN yearly event is a high level summit on the Rule of Law, which was in progress at press time, hosted by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to which President Jonathan has been invited and billed to speak today.

All together, according to UN statements, there would be 83 speakers at the Rule of Law summit, which is designed to foster the rule of law across the nations of the world. “An outcome document is currently being negotiated which would nail down expected conduct and practices of governments regarding the rule of law in their countries.”

President Jonathan is the 24th speaker at that summit. Other speakers include the President of the UN General Assembly and the Secretary-General himself, President of the World Court, Chairman of the International Law Commission and several heads of states and governments.
