IT was all tears and emotions Monday at Awba-femili, Awka North Council; Nzam, the headquarters of the Anambra West Council, and Otuocha, the headquarters of Anambra East council area and Atani, Ogbaru Council of Anambra State when Senators Chris Ngige and Emma Anosike leading some concerned citizens respectively visited the areas to commiserate with the victims of the flood disaster.

Meanwhile, in a rare show of patriotism, about 250 National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members serving in Anambra State have refused reposting out of areas currently submerged by floods in the state.

Ngige, who toured the areas with relief materials and cash donations, bemoaned the state of the roads, which were near impassable occasioned by the flood, said the area should be declared disaster zone.

He, however, appealed to the residents to take heart that he would get the attention of the state and Federal Governments over their plight.

Also, Anosike described the disaster as pathetic, unusual and beyond the capability and ability of the state government, urging the Federal Government to come to the peoples’ rescue immediately.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Inyang Bassey Ekpe, who disclosed this in Awka, said the corps members have demonstrated strong belief in serving the country, adding, “I have never seen such patriotism in my life.”

According to her, the corps members were very patriotic that when we evacuated them to a refugee camp and offered to come for fresh posting to other areas of the state, they turned it down.

She added: “They opted to stay with the people until the flood receded, saying that the people have been good to them, and they can not leave them now.”
