The richest person in history has been identified as an African.

In a new inflation-adjusted list citing the 25 wealthiest people of all time, ancient African King, Mansa Musa, ruler of the Malian Empire, which covered modern day Ghana, Timbuktu and Mali in West Africa, topped the list.

The list, which spans a period of 1,000 years with a combined fortune of $4.317 trillion, was created by CP-Africa, using the annual 2,199.6% rate of inflation, where $100 million in 1913 is equal to $2.299.63 billion in 2012.

CP-Africa, an African business blog, is Africa's leading online brand for progressive news about Africa.

King Mansa topped the list with a personal net worth of $400 billion at the time of his death in 1331. He is followed by the Rothschild family – the richest people on earth today.

The family’s wealth includes assets in mining, banks, private asset management, mixed farming, wine, and charities totaled at $350 billion.

John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, a company that dominated the oil industry, was ranked third on the list.

An industrialist and philanthropist, he is the richest American to have ever lived, worth $340 billion in today’s USD at the time of his death in 1937.

Familiar names on the list include Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates, ranked in 12th position with a total net worth of $136 billion and American business tycoon, Warren Buffet,  who ranked last in the 26th spot with a net worth of $64 billion.
