Hello readers! Welcome to another GUEST POST on A Loco Viva Voce. Today’s Guest Post is a poem written by Yvonne Anyaorah.

Yvonne is a Nigerian Lawyer, poet and freelance writer who is mainly interested in academic research and development, especially with regards to the rights of the Nigerian child. She has a Masters degree with commendation in Oil and Gas law from the University of Aberdeen. She is also a recipient of the National Essay Competition Award held in the year 2000 to commemorate Nigeria’s 40th independence anniversary. Her hobbies include travel, literature and collecting perfume bottles.

THE BEGGAR

Down by the culvert beyond our crescent

A man beggar sits with his legs crossed

His arms open wide beneath his chest

His hair like strings of mops linked apart.

I meet his gaze upon my faux organza clutch

And tossed a pound to the salver by his side

He smiled at me to mask a loss

A loss from the grip of his dignity.
