A former Head of State, Gen.Muhammadu Buhari, has come under intense pressure to accept to play a mediatory role in Boko Haram’s peace overture to the Federal Government.

The sect had on Thursday named Buhari, Dr. Shettima Monguno; a former Yobe State Governor, Senator Bukar Ibrahim; Ambassador Gaji Galtimari; and Aisha Alkali Wakil, and her husband, Alkali as “trusted Nigerians” it was willing to negotiate on its behalf in Saudi Arabia.

Apart from the negotiations, it also demanded for the arrest of ex-Borno State Governor Modu Sheriff, compensation for families of its members killed in the course of its terrorist activities and the rebuilding of its mosques by the Federal Government as its conditions for a ceasefire.

“President Jonathan should not negotiate with Boko Haram members. If he (Jonathan) goes ahead to negotiate with them, then he should be ready to negotiate with MASSOB and other aggrieved groups.

“Again, if the President agrees to negotiate with members of Boko Haram, he would be indirectly saying that the Federal Government cannot guarantee the security of Nigerians.”

I believe it is the law of every country not to negotiate with Terrorists so i ask if Preseident Jonathan should indeed negotiate with Boko Haram?

Do we need to answer the above question?

Contrary to the position of the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Boko Haram’s proposed dialogue with the Federal government in Saudi Arabia, the Federal government has accepted to dialogue with the group in Saudi Arabia as the group rightly proposed.

It was gathered that after due consultations in the past 48 hours with different stakeholders in government, the Federal Government has accepted to go with the condition of the sect members to dialogue with the government in the Holy land.

In a related development, sources have affirmed that the Federal government would be making new commitment regarding the proposed negotiation by the Boko Haram militants as soon as the leaders they have listed to negotiate on their behalf accept the mediating role. Defender News

Dialogue with Boko Haram - Let’s seize this chance for peace - People say

The recent declaration by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, that it was ready for a dialogue with the Federal Government, should be seen as an opportunity by all Nigerians to bring about peace in the country.

However, some are already calling on the government not to dialogue with a roguish organisation.

It is important for everyone to note that, this is a window of opportunity for the country to lay to rest the violence that has claimed innocent lives in the last couple of years.

Taking a look at what is going on, it is certain that the Nigerian security agencies cannot contain the activities of the sect. Every time that there is a bomb blast or a shooting spree, security forces come out to say government was working towards bringing an end to the activities of the sect, yet, the violence keeps getting more sophisticated.

What Nigerians need today is peace, no matter at what cost.

If the perpetrators of the violence have come out to say they are ready to embrace peace, then government should seize the opportunity, since it has no clue to how to bring an end to the violence on its own.

The statement credited to Chief Solomon Lar that government should not dialogue with Boko Haram is unfortunate. Must we continue to allow more innocent souls to die needless deaths?

hmmm. will this dialogue really bring peace. Because from my out point of view, once you begin to negotiate with terrorist, they will keep making demands and if proper care is not taking one will just turn to an errand dog.

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, dismissed insinuations of  a secret dialogue between the administration and the Boko Haram just as he declared former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s invasion of Odi in Bayelsa State in 1999 as a failure that did not help to curb militancy in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking on nationwide television media chat, the president also gave a robust defence of the administration’s fight against corruption as he set a 2014 date on the decision whether he would contest the next presidential election or not.

In the two-hour broadcast session on television and radio network, President Jonathan also pledged to align himself with Nigerians if the citizens choose to retain the two-term tenure system for executive office holders.
