Applications are invited for Africa London Nagasaki Scholarships available for African scientists to undertake a master’s degree related to the control of infectious diseases in Africa. Priority will be given to candidates at an early stage of their scientific career.
The Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund has been created to support African scientists at an early stage of their careers in infectious disease research.
Applicants must be fluent in English. If the applicant’s first language is not English or if the studies at university have not been conducted wholly in the medium of English candidates must take and pass one of the approved internet-based tests (IELTS, TOEFL or a Pearson Test of English).
Course Level:The scholarship will allow African researchers to undertake an MSc in a subject relevant to the control of infectious disease in the developing world at either the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, Japan (NEKKEN) or at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK (LSHTM).
Study Subject:Scholarships are awarded in a subject relevant to the control of infectious disease in the developing world.
Scholarship Award: Successful applicants will receive a maximum of US$50,000 each to cover tuition fees, travel and living expenses. The fund will support up to four scholarships per year.
Scholarship can be taken inJapan or UK (Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, Japan (NEKKEN) or at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK (LSHTM)).
Eligibility:The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these scholarships:
Candidates applying for an Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) MSc scholarship must meet the following criteria.

Candidates applying for a Scholarship at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine must:
*.be of African nationality and normally be resident in sub-Saharan Africa,
*.be fluent in English. If the applicant’s first language is not English or if the studies at university have not been conducted wholly in the medium of English candidates must take and pass one of the approved internet-based tests (IELTS, TOEFL or a Pearson Test of English). The standard of English needed to pass the tests is high and is in line with the level of English required by the UK Border Authority in order to issue a student visa.
*.have a first or upper second class BSc degree or equivalent from an established university in a relevant area of science (a medical degree is not essential),
*.usually have had at least two years’ prior research experience in an area relevant to the study of infectious diseases, and
*.have the support of the head of their institution for undertaking their chosen course.
NEKKEN
Candidates applying for a Scholarship at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki must:
*.be of African nationality and normally be resident in sub-Saharan Africa,
*.be fluent in English,
*.have obtained an MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification from a recognized university,
*.have had at least two years of clinical experience following graduation,
Nationality:African scientists (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) can apply for this Africa London Nagasaki scholarship.
