Hillary Clinton hospitalised
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:46:27 AM »

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital for treatment of a blood clot, an official said.

``Doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion she sustained several weeks ago,’’ Assistant Secretary of State Philippe Reines said.

``She is being treated with anti-coagulants and is at New York-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours.’’

Reines didn't say where the blood clot had formed.

Clinton, 65, suffered the concussion this month when she fainted due to a stomach virus and dehydration, according to reports on Dec. 15. She had been recovering at home after canceling numerous appointments, but had recently been cleared to return to work.

Clinton had been travelling extensively in November and December after announcing she would step down, including farewell trips to Asia and Europe, and to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians.

Numerous long flights can provoke deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots, and doctors quoted by CNN said this could be Clinton's case given her anti-coagulant treatment.

Last week U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Sen. John Kerry to replace Clinton as secretary of state. Kerry's nomination is to go before the Senate, which is expected to approve it.

Hillary Clinton discharged from New York hospital

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been discharged from hospital after treatment on a blood clot between her skull and brain.

Her medical team said she was making good progress, and were confident she would make a full recovery, said the state department.

It added in a statement that she was "eager to get back to the office".

Mrs Clinton was earlier seen leaving New York Presbyterian-Hospital with her husband and daughter.

Mrs Clinton was admitted on Sunday when the clot was discovered. She had suffered a concussion earlier in the month after falling in her home.

The former first lady fainted after becoming dehydrated while battling a stomach ailment, aides have said.

She is being treated with blood thinners to dissolve the clot.

Mrs Clinton had been working from her hospital bed, speaking with staff, and reviewing paperwork, US state department officials said.

"She's been quite active on the phone with all of us," spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
