INEC Yet To Recognise New Mega Party
« on: February 08, 2013, 08:14:51 AM »

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it is yet to recognise the new mega party, All Progressives Congress (APC), which was formed and unveiled by four opposition parties on Wednesday.

Rising from a meeting of the merger committees of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Wednesday Committee announced a successful merger bid and unveiled the new party’s identity which is expected to wrestle power from the ruling PDP in the next general election.

But in a news monitored from the AIT yesterday, the spokeman for INEC chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu said INEC was yet to receive any formal documents of the merger from the political parties involved. He said that the party needed to file documents of the new identity for it to know of their existence.

He said “As long as they have not filed that identity, they cannot be recognised,” adding that the Electoral Act provides that they must make a formal request to INEC.
