The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has sealed off a notorious centre for the retail of illicit drugs in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, popularly called “York City”, in what is aimed at ridding the state of state of hard and illicit drugs.

Florence Ezeonye, Abia State commander, NDLEA, affirmed that the latest raid at the centre will mark the end of ‘York City’ as a market place for the retail and consumption of illicit drugs, as the agency has taken over the place.

According to the NDLEA boss, the purpose of the operation was to wipe out the centre as a retail market for hard drugs. “The place is now going to be our newest beat in Abia,” she stated.

To sustain the fight, Ezeonye explained that the agency was partnering with other sister security agencies, the state government and some concerned citizens, who offered to pay for office space for the agency at York. http://www.businessdayonline.com/NG/index.php/city-file/city-file/51870-ndlea-seals-off-notorious-illicit-drugs-centre-in-aba

The NDLEA announced plans to open an office at ‘York City’ last year, to stop the activities of drug dealers and rid the area of hard and illicit drugs, as previous attempts to sanitise the area failed.

According to the agency, well-meaning Nigerians, who were supportive of their course, rented the place and donated chairs and tables for them.
