Last Friday, May 25, the Adamasingba stadium in Ibadan played host to Star Trek, Nigeria’s biggest rolling concert tour. Given the splendid performance displayed by the featured artistes, the tour will keep tongues of the concert visitors wagging for months to come.

The thunderous ovation that heralded Tuface Idibia as he mounted the Star Trek stage was evidence of a crowd thirsty for songs from Nigeria’s best musical act. He did not disappoint. With the full complement of a live band, Tuface dished out song after song from his repertoire of past albums.

His stagecraft and mastery of lyrics ensured that the crowd was not bored throughout his performance which lasted close to an hour. Some of the songs which sent the crowd on a wild frenzy were: Implication, Free, For Instance, See Me As Your Brother, Holy Pass and My Love is Here To Stay. Others included the classic, African Queen, Nfana Ibaga and the fast-paced Implication.

Aside 2face, other stars on ground to make the day a success were the likes of 9ice, Obesere, Wande Coal, Crystals, the winning band from Star Quest and others.

On ground to compere the Ibadan leg of Star Trek was was popular stand-up comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka. He also acted as the hype-man for all the musical acts that night.

At Makurdi, thousands of enthusiastic music lovers turned out to watch probably the biggest musical concert staged in that part of the country from the beginning of this year till date. As at 11pm on Saturday, May 26, the day of the event, more than 4,000 tickets had been sold. Yet, the crowd which queued outside the IBB Square, Makurdi venue of Star Trek, continued to build up.

Gideon Okeke, show host of the recently concluded Star Quest 2012, anchored the Makurdi leg of Star Trek. First to perform was the Crystals Band, followed by Diamondz, also past Star Quest winners. Rap impresarios, Naeto C and Ice Prince delivered sublime rap lines that kept the crowd entertained and asking for more. Naeto C, a Star Trek veteran, brought on stage Yung Six, an upcoming musical act as back up.

J. Martins, Nigerian Afro-Highlife crooner, delighted the crowd through his fast paced performance. The highlight of his performance was when he picked out two members of the audience asking them to name the organisers of the show. Even though they got the questions wrong, he still gave them N10, 000 each, for having the courage to come out on stage.

The newly crowned ‘thousandaires’, James Sonter and Abel Vindah, were full of thanks for J. Martins for the gift. Wande Coal, newly signed Mavin Records act, concluded the Star Trek leg of Star Trek.

The Star Trek 2012 train will move to Ejigbo Stadium in Lagos and Zenabab Hotels and Resort in Ilesha, on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, 2012 respectively. The performing musical acts will be Wande Coal, 9ice, Obesere, Yinka Best, J. Martins and M.I. Crystals Band will also perform at the two locations.
