The Golf GTI has changed considerably over the course of its 33-year history.

The first- and second-generation models were lauded for the responsiveness and fun, but subsequent versions were criticised for being too slow and heavy.

The Mk V GTI was a return to form, with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that delivered strong performance.
