The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, was shut-down early today, Thursday, when policemen, who brought corpses of their colleagues that were killed in Bama carnage to the hospital’s morgue went on rampage, shooting a medical Doctor, beating to coma some medical staff, and destroying a number medical laboratories in the hospital.

A staff of the hospital who did not want his name in print said the police who brought the corpses from Bama yesterday for deposit were told that the morgue was full of other corpses, but insisted that their own corpses must also be admitted.

He said “You know when there is no place to keep corpses sometimes they are kept on the floor pending when a space is created for refrigerating, but when they came this morning, the mobile policemen went on rampage and started shooting. They beat up a professor and other medical staff and also shot a medical doctor before some Military men in the hospital came to bring the situation under control.”

According to him, the hospital has been shutdown for now, as some doctors have threatened, not to attend to policemen who are being brought for treatment almost on a daily basis.

“The doctors are saying that, they deserve some respect from the uniform men because some of the security operatives, particularly the police have this disrespecting attitude towards them. Some of these doctors and professors they beat up would have been IGPs if they were policemen, but somebody who is far down the ladder would be treating them as nobody.” he explained.

Also a top security official, who did not want his name published said a professor at the UMTH called and told him what happened at the hospital, stressing that, the incident was unfortunate.

Attempt to confirm the incident failed as efforts to speak with the Police Commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi who was at the Maiduguri Government House about one hour after the incident refused to talk to our correspondent. He quickly entered his car and shut the door, even as his orderly told reporters that he would not want to speak to the Press.
