Floods hit many parts of Lagos metropolis following Wednesday’s downpour, which lasted for about two hours.

The floods, which took over some roads such as Ikorodu Road, Ajegunle, Aboru, Agege and Ijeshatedo, resulted in gridlock.

Many vehicles broke down on the flooded parts of the roads while others skidded off the roads due to poor visibility.

On Ikorodu Road, about 15 vehicles crashed into the median used to demarcate the BRT lane following the floods. The worst hit parts of the road were Idiroko, Savoil, Obanikoro and Palm Grove where more than a dozen vehicles broke down on both the expressway and the service lanes.

On the bridge linking Fadeyi with Western Avenue, trailer carrying gravel skidded off its lane and hung on the bridge, pouring its content in the process.

Residents count losses

A resident of Olarenwaju Street, Aboru Road, Pastor Gabriel Adewale, said the rain was heavy and dealt a devastating blow to him.

Another resident, Mrs. Modupe Adeoye, said flood destroyed many of her properties in her two-room apartment.

“What am I going to mention? Is it chairs, TV set, mattresses, foodstuffs? In fact, it has destroyed all my wares. I sell rice and beans; I usually bring them back after the day’s sale but all have been destroyed.”

On Orisumbare Street, Iyana Ipaja, more than 30 buildings were submerged by floods.

A church, Divine Grace Deliverance and Healing Ministry at the tail of the street, was flooded and musical instruments and other properties were destroyed.

Opposite the church, many inhabitants were seen bailing out water from their various rooms.

It was observed that the street is filled with cluster of buildings. On that street, there is no gutter and once water flows from the beginning of the street, it gets stuck there.
