ENUGU—AUTHORITIES of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu has reviewed downward the school fees payable by students studying education courses in the institution as part of efforts to motive the people to study education and become good teachers.

According to the new fees announced by Vice Chancellor of the university, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke in Enugu Tuesday, those offered admission to study education will pay N80,000 instead of N124,000 previously charged per session including tuition and accommodation.

He said that the reduction in fees was based on the discovery that those who desire to study education and become teachers “are not from well to do family, so we want to help them to do education and become teachers.”

“Those who will be coming to do education will be paying N80,000 instead of N124,000 we will even continue to reduce this so we can get the best heads for our schools. You can’t be talking about national development when our schools are not attracting the best heads.

“We have to encourage them to study education and become teachers and we have to find ways of motivating them in their different schools because what we have now is that we are not getting the best heads at our schools and that’s unfortunate because you cannot give what you don’t have.

“So for us to move further we have to attract, we have to compete with the banks in getting the best heads in to our different institutions. I want to begin here by ensuring that they can study by reducing their fees and once you are doing education and you are good you can be sure of my scholarship,” the VC said.

Prof. Anieke disclosed that his friends abroad were helping to fund the scholarship scheme for students, promising that he would make a case for the Faculty of Education in order to give special consideration to those doing education in the institution.

He expressed the determination of the institution to change the face of education in Enugu state, stressing that the university which got its operational license on November 3, 2009 was not intended to add to the number of Universities in Nigeria “but to do something different that will actually show our people what the university should be.”

“Research is central to what we call university thus we set out to get the good heads, the professors and the scholars.  We went hunting within and outside the country and today we have a good number of them.  Again we thought of the need to create a setting, an atmosphere of collaboration because research today has become global; you have to get the experience of others, you have to join themENUGU—AUTHORITIES of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu has reviewed downward the school fees payable by students studying education courses in the institution as part of efforts to motive the people to study education and become good teachers.
