The Federal Government announced Tuesday that it has concluded arrangements to award N1trilion contracts for the construction of coastal road in the Niger Delta region next month.
Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe who stated this at a meeting with Executive committee members of Ijaw National Congress, INC, in Abuja, said the ten-lane road network would connect all oil producing communities in the nine states of the region from Bayelsa State to Ondo State.
Elder Orubebe noted that the ministry will convene a conference of “international donors†within the next two months where the oil companies in the region may be required to donate for the execution of projects, described as vital to economic development of the region.
He said that the ministry would not depend on the Federal allocation to the ministry alone in its current zeal to carry out the coastal road project and other development projects in the region.
According to him, “the coastal road will cost not less than N1trillion. In the next one month, the contract will be awarded. In the next few years, the Niger Delta will be the economic hob of the world because there is no place in the world like the Niger Delta region.
He added that, “there is no amount of money spent on the development of Niger Delta that will be too much because when there is peace in the Niger Delta, there will be peaceful environment for the oil production and when there is a peaceful environment for oil production, there will be money for the countryâ€.
The leader of the INC, Dr. Atuboyedia Obianime urged the government to expedite action on development plans in the region, adding, “time is of essence in the bid to address the issues of the Niger Delta regionâ€.
