Chief Betty Efekodha, Commissioner for Women Affairs in Delta State, says no fewer than 200 women have benefited from the 2012 Skills’ Acquisition Programme for Women.
Efekodha made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

She said that the women were trained in various skills, ranging from soap making, catering services, tailoring, computer services, hair dressing, bead making and jewellery works.

Efekodha said that at the end of the training, starter packs were given to the beneficiaries to enable them set up their own businesses.
“Last year, we were able to train women in various skills and at the end of the training programme, which lasted for about six weeks, we gave the women starter packs,” she said.
Efekodha said that the women, who benefited from the training programme, were selected from Asaba and Oko-Anala community in Oshimili and Burutu local government areas of the state.
She also said that the training programme for this year would soon commence, adding that the potential beneficiaries had started enrolling for the programme.
“And as soon as we are done with the enrolment, we will commence the training because the process is on,” she said.
The commissioner said that the ministry had established women development centres across the state where women were trained to enable them to contribute to the welfare of their families, especially the education of their children.
She said that one of the major duties of her ministry was to train women in various skills, as these skills would be helpful in efforts to equip them for their future.
Efekodha, who underscored the need for more women to key into the skills acquisition programme, noted that the programme was aimed at assisting the women to be self-reliant.
She pledged that the state government would continue to support programmes that could contribute meaningfully to women empowerment efforts in the state.
She, nonetheless, commended the state government for its micro-credit programme which, she said, had brought hope to the people, especially women in the state.
