Soldier Admits Killing 16 Afghan Women And Children

U.S. Army Sergeant Robert Bales will get a sentence for the killing of 16 Afghan citizens with most of the victims being women and children.

According to a villager, many of the victims were shot in the head in an incident that took place in March 2012 in Khadahar.

The villagers in Kandahar province however expressed their displeasure because they feel Sergeant Robert Bales is being treated with leniency as they expected that the soldier would have been given an execution order by now, a move that was thwarted by the Sergeant Bales when he admitted to the killings.

The sentencing hearing begins today, Tuesday 20th August, at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington State.

And a jury will decide whether Bales will ever be eligible for parole or spend the rest of his life in prison.

Bales was serving his fourth tour of duty and his lawyers argue Bales was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a brain injury even before his deployment to Afghanistan.

Bales is contrite about the killings but they say he just snapped.

When asked in June by the military judge why he carried out the murders he said: “There’s not a good reason in this world.”
