FCTA embarks on reconstruction of healthcare centres

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has embarked on the reconstruction and review of its primary healthcare centres.

The minister of state of the territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, made this known on Wednesday at the inauguration of the ministerial committee on the reconstruction of primary healthcare centres system in Abuja.

Akinjide expressed concern over the poor primary healthcare infrastructure and personnel in the territory, saying that the inauguration was to improve healthcare service delivery at the grassroot.

“Primary healthcare sector is a condition of healthcare and if we don’t get it right then we have been building on sand. But the report has shown us that out of the facilities we have, over 200 of them, only about 10 percent, can be said to meet all the requirements. A lot of them do not have access to water, do not have toilets, are not connected to electricity and do not have enough staff,” she stated.

“The honourable minister and I have decided that we needed to constitute this committee to take a good hard look at primary healthcare system and find ways to make them meet the required standard they ought to be.”

Akinjide said that the administration has started the reconstruction works on the affected primary healthcare facilities in the six area councils of the territory and she urged residents to cooperate with the administration in its efforts to strengthen the healthcare system delivery in the area councils and satellite towns
