My wife is dating our Community Development Association Chairman, but I still love her,’’ a security guard, Mr Ibrahim Hambolu, 40, on Thursday, told an Igando Customary Court, Lagos.

Ibrahim, the respondent in a divorce suit filed by Modinat, his wife of 15 years, alleged that the CDA chairman also regularly visited their home to take his meals.

“My wife is dating our CDA chairman; she cooks for him and the man comes to our house to take his breakfast, lunch and dinner, while my wife denies me food.

“My wife later packed out on March 20, 2013 without my consent to an unknown destination.

“I believe our chairman has rented an apartment for her and now she wants to divorce me,” the security guard said.

However, Ibrahim, who broke down in tears, pleaded with the court not to dissolve the union as he still loved Modinat.

“After she packed out, I pleaded with her on the telephone to come back but she refused,” he said

Modinat, 36, a trader, told the court that she was fed up with the union and wanted divorce.

The petitioner, a mother of three, said that she filed the divorce suit on the grounds of alleged battery and threat to her business.

Modinat alleged that Ibrahim started beating her in the first year of their marriage.

“Ibrahim is a hot tempered person; he gets angry at the slightest provocation,” she said, adding that, “even when I am pregnant he beats me.”

She said that her husband had on several occasions destroyed goods in her shop over allegation of infidelity or anytime they had a misunderstanding.

The petitioner described Ibrahim as an ingrate, who did not appreciate the sacrifices she made to the union.

Modinat alleged that she borrowed money from her cooperative society to buy a motorcycle for him.

“I bought a motorcycle (Okada) for my husband to use for commercial purposes but he stays at home and does not work.

“He later sold the motorcycle without my consent and I do not know what he used the money for,” the estranged wife said.

The petitioner said that her husband never gave her money adding that he claimed that in his village husbands do not give their wives money.
