WAEC releases May/June results, Appoints Dr. Iyi Uwadiae as New registrar

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Friday, released the results of the May/June 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at its National office in Yaba, Lagos, even as it appointed the Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae as the Registrar of the Council.

Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, Head of the Nigeria National Office said a total of 1, 695, 878 candidates, consisting of 923, 974 male and 748, 250 female candidates sat for the May/June 2012 WASSCE.

Out of the overall total number of candidates, 1, 545, 004 candidates, representing 91.10% have their results fully released, while 150, 874 candidates, representing 8.90%  have a few subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.

Uwadiae said such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.

The results of 112, 000 candidates, representing 6.70% of the total number of candidates are being withheld for  various report of alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

Further breakdown of the results showed that, of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 771, 731 candidates, representing 46.14% obtained six credits and above; 952, 156 candidates, representing 56.93% obtained five credits and above.

Similarly, 1, 107, 747 candidates, representing 66.24% obtained credits and above in four subjects, while 1, 246, 729 candidates, representing 74.55% obtained credits and above in three subjects. A total of 1, 380, 596 candidates, representing 82.56% obtained credits and above in two subjects.

He also disclosed that a total of 114 blind candidates registered for the examination. Out of this number, 95 blind candidates sat for the examination, of which 21 candidates, representing 22.11% obtained credits and above in five (5) subjects, including English Language, noting that blind candidates don’t take Mathematics and Science practicals in WASSCE diets.

All the candidates who sat the examination were asked to check the details of their performance with their scratch cards on the results website: www.waecdirect.org within the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, as a total of 649, 156 candidates, representing 38.81%, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English and Mathematics, Uwadiae, who is to assume office as the new Registrar of WAEC by October 1, 2012 disclosed that  “the results showed some improvement an indication that people are doing what they should do.”

Meanwhile, the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the WAEC, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae has been appointed as the Registrar of the Council.

Dr. Uwadiae, whose appointment as Registrar was ratified during the 60th Annual Council Meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, March 2012, had been the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the Council since February 4, 2008.

He will assume office Monday, October 1, 2012 when the incumbent Registrar, Alhaja (Mrs.) Mulikat A. Bello, would statutorily retire from the Council. Dr. Uwadiae, who hails from Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, holds the National Certificate of Education (NCE) of the University of Lagos.

He also obtained the B.Ed (Mathematics) degree from the University of Benin as well as M.Ed and Ph.D (Educational Evaluation) from the University of Ibadan.

Before joining the Council, he was at various times a Mathematics Teacher at Remo Secondary School, Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria and the College of Education, Benin, where he rose to the position of Head of Mathematics Department.
