Jega Admits Concerns Of International Community over stability of the country

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega has admitted that there are concerns in the international community over the stability of the country ahead of the 2015 elections.

He further vowed that the forthcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states this year will not be a repeat of the controversial Anambra governorship election of last year.

The electoral commission had admitted the governorship election was plagued by flaws.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, stated these in Abuja while hosting the Ambassador of Netherlands in Nigeria, John C.M Groffen, at the commission’s headquarters. The ambassador had cautioned against political instability of the country ahead of 2015.

Jega, who acknowledged the concerns of political instability, added that the electoral commission has learnt lessons from previous elections; hence it was poised not to repeat those mistakes.

Jega who said 2014 would be a very busy year for the commission added that INEC was “aware that friends of Nigeria are anxious as we move towards general elections and they are keen to know the challenges that we face ahead of the elections.”

Jega continued: “We are aware that a stable nation will lead to improved economic growth. Our job is to use electoral process to ensure that elections are conducted with credibility and add to political and economic stability of the country.”
