International interest in Japanese photography has tended to focus on male photographers; a new book featuring 25 Japanese women practitioners, I’m So Happy You Are Here, aims to redress that balance. The collection takes in the history of Japanese women photographers with particular emphasis on those working from the 1950s to the 1990s.Many of the early street-photography pioneers documented the postwar realities of Japan, particularly the ways that women’s bodies had been effectively colonised by the male gaze of American servicemen stationed in Tokyo and elsewhere.
