3 Dead, Seven Rescued in Boat Mishap around Apapa, Lagos

At least three people were yesterday feared dead and seven rescued from a boat which capsised at Ogogoro village, Boulos in Navy Town located in Apapa area of Lagos State.

Speaking with newsmen on the tragedy, the director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke Osanyintolu, said three people were feared drowned in the mishap while seven were rescued.

He said: "A local passenger boat with ten passengers capsised. It was going from coconut jetty, Apapa to Ojo town. It capsised behind. Seven were rescued while three are missing. The boat's take off point was Irewe near Ijegun in Satelite."

He said the boat which was conveying women and children were travelling on the high sea at about 12 midnight without headlight and collided with a bigger boat.

Osanyintolu said the occupants were rescued by the Nigerian Navy Special Unit, officers of the National Inland Waterways Agency (NIWA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). http://allafrica.com/stories/201401250244.html
