‘All inmates are safe’ — NCoS dismisses claims of bomb explosion at Maiduguri custodial centre

 The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed
reports of a bomb explosion at the Maiduguri Custodial Centre.

 

Social media reports had alleged that there was a blast at
the facility, suggesting a security breach and disruption at the correctional centre.

 

However, in a statement on Monday, Abubakar Umar, the
service’s public relations officer (SPRO), said there had been no explosion or
security breach at any custodial facility in the country.

 

“All inmates are safe, and daily operations are running
smoothly. The public is advised to disregard any rumour suggesting otherwise,”
the statement reads.

 

“The public is also enjoined to remain calm, as all inmates
in our custodial centres are going about their treatment regime and there is no
cause for alarm.”

 

Umar warned against the spread of false information,
especially on social media, saying such rumours could incite panic and
undermine public confidence in security institutions.

 

He asked Nigerians to verify information from credible and
official sources before sharing, particularly in matters relating to national
security and public safety.

 

 

“NCoS remains proactive in the management and protection of
its facilities nationwide,” Umar said.

 

“The Maiduguri Custodial Centre, like others across the
country, is part of the correctional infrastructure managed by the NCoS to
ensure not only the secure detention of inmates but also their rehabilitation
and reintegration into society.

 

“The service will continue to monitor its facilities closely
and provide timely updates to the public when necessary.”

 

The NCoS spokesperson asked citizens to remain law-abiding
and supportive of ongoing reforms in the correctional system aimed at improving
service delivery and enhancing national security.
