Nigerian Air Force Establishes FOB in Akwa Ibom to Bolster South-South Security

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has set up a Forward Operational Base (FOB) in Akwa Ibom to strengthen its operational reach in the South-South region, enhancing national security and maritime protection. The initiative, supported by the Akwa Ibom State Government through a donation of land, was announced by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Eno in Uyo on Thursday.According to a statement by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, on Friday in Abuja, the new FOB, strategically located near the Eket Airstrip, will boost air power projection and safeguard maritime security, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea corridor. Air Marshal Abubakar described the state’s land donation as a significant contribution to national security infrastructure, noting its potential to foster civil commerce, investment, and tourism in Akwa Ibom. “The base will further assure the safety and security of persons and property, making Akwa Ibom a prime destination for investment and tourism,” he said.Governor Umo Eno, in his response, emphasized Akwa Ibom’s growing role in Nigeria’s security framework, pledging continued support for the NAF. “Security is the foundation for meaningful development. We are committed to partnering with the Nigerian Air Force to protect our state and national boundaries,” Eno stated, highlighting the state’s status as a littoral region and the importance of the FOB in maintaining peace.The establishment of the FOB marks a significant step in integrating the NAF into Akwa Ibom’s security architecture, addressing previous gaps in the state’s air force presence. The base is expected to enhance surveillance and response capabilities against threats like oil theft and maritime crimes in the region, while also supporting Nigeria’s broader economic goals, including the promotion of a thriving blue economy.
