Hope Uzodimma Launches 7,000 Member Imo Vigilance Services Organisation to Curb Insecurity

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has taken a major step in the fight against insecurity by officially inaugurating the Imo State Vigilance Services Organisation, a newly trained community-based security outfit made up of 7,000 operatives. The governor unveiled the group on Friday during the passing-out parade of the recruits, describing the initiative as a strategic move to “nip insecurity in the bud” before it can take root in communities.According to Uzodimma, members of the organisation will function as the “eyes and ears” of their various communities. They have been equipped with vital skills in intelligence gathering, early threat detection, and collaboration with conventional security agencies to prevent crimes rather than merely respond to them.Speaking at the event, the governor emphasized that the relative peace enjoyed during the 2025 Christmas and New Year celebrations must be protected and sustained. He stated that the people of Imo have worked too hard to rebuild a peaceful and progressive state, and that any attempt to reverse those gains will not be tolerated.“We have moved from a period of fear to one of relative calm. We must do everything possible to keep it that way,” Uzodimma said. He further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support the vigilance group by providing timely information on suspicious activities. The Imo State Vigilance Services Organisation was established under the Imo State Security Organisation Amendment Law No. 3 of 2025, giving it a clear legal framework to operate within communities across the state.Hon. Modestus Osakwe, Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, described the launch as a turning point in the state’s security architecture, saying it signals the beginning of a new era of sustained peace, safety, and development for all residents of Imo.The operatives are expected to be deployed across various local government areas in the coming weeks to begin intelligence-led community policing. Authorities say the group will work closely with the police, army, and other security outfits already operating in the state. The initiative has been widely viewed as a proactive response to lingering security challenges in the South-East region, with many residents expressing hope that it will help maintain the current atmosphere of stability and enable continued socio-economic progress in Imo State.
