Niger community invasion leaves four dead, shops burnt

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the killing of four people and the setting ablaze of shops by terrorists in the state. The terrorists invaded Damala village in Woko District of Borgu Local Government Area on Saturday in an attack that occurred in the early hours of the day, causing panic as residents ran in different directions in search of safety.A source in the community said an undisclosed number of residents were also abducted during the attack. The raid came a few days after terrorists, in large numbers, invaded the Kasuwan Daji Market in Demo village, also in Borgu Local Government Area, where they killed no fewer than 42 people and abducted others.Reacting to the attack, the spokesman of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said in a statement on Tuesday that the bandits killed four persons and rustled some cattle.“The bandits attacked Damala village in Woko District of Borgu LGA, rustled an unspecified number of cattle, and killed four residents during the attack.“The gunmen also set several shops in the community ablaze before fleeing the scene.“Security agencies promptly responded to the incident and have since visited the affected area.“Clearance operations are currently ongoing, while security monitoring has been intensified to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents,” Abiodun stated. He assured the public that efforts were being sustained to apprehend the perpetrators and restore normalcy in the area.Borgu and Agwara local government areas in Niger State have become hotbeds of terrorist attacks in recent times.Apart from the killing of over 42 residents at Kasuwan Daji Market in Borgu, terrorists had earlier abducted 315 pupils, students and teachers of St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Paipiri community, Agwara Local Government Area. The abductees were later released after one month in captivity following the intervention of the Federal Government.
