I Never Said Soldiers Should Reject Tinubu’s Salary Hike – Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming he urged Nigerian soldiers to reject the salary increase approved by President Bola Tinubu. In a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi described the reports as false and called on Nigerians to disregard them.“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue,” he said.President Tinubu recently approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for armed forces personnel, effective September 1, 2026. The package is expected to benefit about 250,000 personnel and raise the annual salary bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.Obi stressed that his respect for members of the security forces remains unwavering. He said he has consistently advocated for adequate equipment, motivation, and protection for security personnel.“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering.“I have consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel,” he stated. The former Anambra State governor recalled an incident in which soldiers were killed by insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, saying it prompted him to question how those defending the nation could be left vulnerable.“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need.”Obi pledged that the welfare and safety of security personnel would be a top priority if he were elected president.“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority. Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.“Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated.”He urged Nigerians to ignore the misleading report and reaffirmed his commitment to a clear vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
