Niger Women Leaders Urge Stronger Action Against Child Trafficking, Early Marriage

Women leaders under the Federal Government/International Fund for Agricultural Development (FG/IFAD) Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) have appealed for greater government backing to boost farming activities, while also calling for urgent measures to curb child trafficking and early marriage in Niger State.Speaking in Bida during a capacity-building programme for women, youth, and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), the leaders emphasized that direct access to government officials is vital for addressing challenges in agriculture, women’s welfare, and child protection. They noted that while some authorities had responded to their advocacy efforts, others remained inaccessible. The women stressed the need for increased support to expand agricultural production and strengthen their contributions to family and community development.Highlighting the growing risks of child trafficking and early marriage, the leaders urged stronger collaboration between government agencies, community networks, and stakeholders to safeguard vulnerable girls.Representatives Hajarat T. Mohammed and Priscilla Ibrahim underscored that advocacy must go beyond raising concerns, pushing instead for constructive engagement that influences policies and resource allocation. For PWD networks, the training was seen as an opportunity to enhance participation in advocacy and decision-making. Muhammad Abubakar Enagi, Chairman of E.I. People with Disabilities Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd., praised VCDP for including farmers with disabilities, saying the initiative boosted their confidence.State Rural Institution Gender Mainstreaming Officer, Hajiya Maimuna Abubakar Ahmed, explained that the programme was designed to equip networks with tools to engage decision-makers effectively and push for policies that directly benefit women, youth, and PWDs.
