Melaye to EFCC: We’ll Prove Nigerians Are More Than FG if Atiku is Arrested

Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government against any move to invite, arrest, or interrogate African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. In a video posted on his X account, Melaye declared that the ADC would demonstrate that Nigerians far outnumber those in government if Atiku is targeted over what he described as frivolous corruption petitions.“This is our note of warning,” Melaye said. “If due to this frivolous petitions you invite, arrest, or interview Atiku Abubakar… we will prove to you that those in government are less than one percent of the population of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We will prove to you that the people own government.”The warning follows a petition by former House of Representatives member Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reopen old corruption cases against Atiku. The petition, signed on Agbonayinma’s behalf by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, references investigations conducted between 2005 and 2006. At the time, the EFCC and an administrative panel probed allegations of money laundering, abuse of office, and the diversion of about $135 million from the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) while Atiku was Vice President. Those probes contributed to a major political rift between Atiku and then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. On December 20, 2006, a Lagos State High Court set aside the EFCC’s administrative indictment, ruling it unconstitutional and flawed.
