24 State Assemblies Approve State Police Amendment — Gbajabiamila

The push to establish a dual policing system in Nigeria has cleared a major hurdle, with 24 State Houses of Assembly approving the constitutional amendment required to give legal backing to state police.Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the development on Friday, noting that the approvals met the two-thirds threshold stipulated under Section 9 of the Constitution. The amendment, contained in the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeks to create a dual policing structure comprising the Federal Police Service and state police services. It had earlier been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly before being transmitted to the states for ratification.Gbajabiamila said the draft National Policing Bill, which outlines the framework for the new system, is undergoing final legislative review at the Ministry of Justice and is expected to be returned by October 30 for presentation to President Bola Tinubu. The Working Group commended the state assemblies for their swift action and urged stakeholders to support what it described as a smooth transition to a dual policing system aimed at improving public safety. With the constitutional requirement now met, the amendment will be returned to the National Assembly for onward transmission to the President for assent.
