Obama Blasts Trump on Iran Conflict, Higher Prices While Stumping for Democrats

Former U.S. President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of the ongoing war with Iran and rising consumer prices while campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.Speaking at rallies in Ohio and Michigan on Saturday, Obama called the elections “our last best chance to at least rein in some of the foolishness of this administration.” He urged voters to hold Trump accountable and limit what he described as the president’s excessive actions.Obama linked the Iran conflict, now entering its eighth month after U.S. and Israeli strikes began in late February—to higher energy costs. He argued that the war has given Tehran greater leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. “This is the reason why the price of oil is up. Nobody disputes that. This is the reason the price of diesel is up. This is why just about everything is up,” he said.He contrasted the current situation with his own administration’s 2015 nuclear deal, which he said prevented Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons without military action. “Iran didn’t have nuclear weapons, because I put a deal in place that everybody acknowledged kept them from getting nukes. And I didn’t have to fire a missile to do it; I just had to engage in diplomacy. He pulled out of it, starts this war. So seven months later, how’s that war going?” Obama asked. He pointed to attacks on U.S. allies and bases, American casualties, and depleted missile stocks. On the economy, Obama acknowledged that inflation and living costs helped drive voters away from Democrats in 2024. But he said Trump’s policies had made things worse: “If you thought everything was too expensive before ‘you know who,’ everything is more expensive now.”Trump, campaigning in Georgia, defended his record. He described the period as “the golden age of America,” said oil prices would fall, and highlighted tariffs as a revenue source. On the Iran conflict, he told reporters he had handled it effectively and that the U.S. would win whether through a deal or by finishing the campaign. Trump also repeated a pledge of $5,000 payments to adults if Republicans keep Congress and attacked Democrats on immigration. In Ohio, Obama backed former Sen. Sherrod Brown (challenging Sen. Jon Husted) and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton (facing Vivek Ramaswamy). He criticized a Ramaswamy campaign ad that featured Acton’s estranged mother. The midterms will decide control of Congress for the rest of Trump’s term. Both parties are emphasizing the economy, the Iran war, immigration, and accountability as early voting continues.
