Novak Djokovic clutched the most coveted award in tennis sport – the gilded silver two-handled trophy presented to the winner of the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

“The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World,” the inscription on it read. The name of every winner is etched on the urn or, since 2009, on a detachable base added when the trophy ran out of room.

The 2014 Wimbledon Championships took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom, from 23 June to 6 July 2014. They were the 128th championships, and the third Grand Slam tournament of the year, played on grass courts and part of the ATP World Tour, the WTA Tour, the ITF Junior Tour and the NEC Tour. They were organised by the All England Lawn Tennis Club and the International Tennis Federation.

Before, no name used to appear on the trophy more than Roger Federer’s, which had been etched seven times. Djokovic nearly let it happen again last Sunday by blowing a huge fourth-set lead before he captured a taut fifth set to snare the trophy for himself.

Shortly after his 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 victory for his second Wimbledon title over Roger Federer, Djokovic carried the trophy through the hallways of the club. He was greeted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, known worldwide as William and Kate.

“Thank you for staying all the way through it,” Djokovic said to the royal couple.

“It was amazing,” the duke said. “Incredible tennis.”

“Many congratulations,” the duchess added.

Pleasantries complete, Djokovic, a 27-year-old from Serbia, took the trophy to a balcony, and a huge throng cheered at the sight of the man and his prize. For the tournament’s top-seeded player, it was a celebration of elation and relief.

The victory was Djokovic’s seventh Grand Slam title, drawing him even with John McEnroe and Mats Wilander in eighth place on the career list. More important, it upended Djokovic’s recent struggles in finals of majors. He had lost three in a row and five of his past six.

Last year at Wimbledon, Djokovic lost in the final to Andy Murray, who was buoyed by hopes that he would become the first British men’s winner in 77 years. Djokovic went on to lose to Rafael Nadal at last year’s United States Open and this spring’s French Open.

Djokovic now highest-paid tennis player

In 2012, it looked like the tennis player’s spectacular career was winding down. Suddenly, he was back on top. People With Money magazine reported on July 8 that Djokovic is the highest-paid tennis player in the world, pulling in an astonishing $58m (N9bn) between June 2013 and June 2014, nearly $30m (N4.9bn) lead over his closest competitor.

In compiling this yearly list, the magazine considers factors such as upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work.

Djokovic’s net worth

According to Forbes magazine, the Serbian tennis player is reportedly worth $350m (N56.7bn). He owes his fortune to smart stock investments, substantial property holdings, and lucrative endorsement deals with CoverGirl cosmetics.

He also owns several restaurants (the “Fat Djokovic Burger” chain) in Belgrade, a Football Team (the “Belgrade Angels”); he has launched his own brand of Vodka (Pure Wonderdjokovic – Serbia), and is tackling the juniors market with a top-selling perfume (With Love from Novak) and a fashion line called “Novak Djokovic Seduction
