Navy hands over eight suspected bunkerers to EFCC
« on: January 11, 2013, 10:01:51 AM »
Nigerian Navy  in Calabar, Cross River State,  on Thursday handed over eight suspected bunkerers to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for prosecution.

The suspects were arrested  between Igbani Station and Parrot Island on the Calabar waterways with over 220 drums of illegally produced diesel by the Navy.

Commanding Officer, NNS Victory, Commodore Kingdom Itoko, said the suspects were apprehended while conveying the product to Calabar  in a wooden boat. He said two pumping machines were recovered from them.

Itoko  said the Navy would not relent in ridding the Eastern maritime environment of criminal elements. He lamented  the negative effects of   bunkering on the  economy.

The naval chief said,  “I want to tell Nigerians,  especially those living in Cross River State that we are not resting on our laurels  in the fight  against illegal bunkering and oil theft.”

Receiving the suspects, Assistant Detective Superintendent of the  EFCC in  Port  Harcourt Office, Mr. Abdullahi Musa, said the agency would  investigate the suspects as directed by the headquarters.

Musa said the investigation would centre on unravelling the sponsors of the business after which they would be prosecuted.
