Director General National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Mr. Chris Onyemenam has assured Nigerians that the commission will capture and register no fewer than 100million Nigerians within 30 months.

Speaking at a One-Day Stakeholders Session on the scheme held in Sokoto, the DG maintained that the new identification number would ensure socio-economic security for holders.

While assuring that the new synchronised systemic network of database  would guarantee comprehensive and acceptable information on both Nigerians and foreigners who have stayed in the country for long, he  revealed that, it is not a citizenship certification but a comprehensive database designed for the population.

Represented by the director, IT/ National Identity Database Department Alhaji Abdulaziz Aliyu, the DG assured that, the scheme has started across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

He noted that, the exercise is going to be a continuous one. In addition, the National Identity number would be issued to all Nigerians above the age of 16 before it is subsequently enforced.

According to him, “Each Nigerian registered will be given a unique number to be generated randomly and it will be useful in the provision of all public services”.

The director general also stressed that, the system will enhance the security of the nation, improve socio economic activities, human rights and the general well being of Nigerians.
