Warri 2013: Nigeria leading the Medals table with 5 Golds

Nigeria and Egypt were at their best on Day Two of the ongoing first African Youths Athletics Championship at Warri Stadium, Delta State, just as Nigeria won four gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Nigeria showed supremacy in the 400m girls  event when Odiong Edidiong Ofonime powered home to the gold medal in 54.46 seconds ahead of her compatriot and Junaid Abimbola who crossed the tape in 54.81s, while Galefele Moroko of Botswana with 55.52s to settle for bronze medal.

In the girls 100m race, it was another feat for the country as the duo of Suraj Neima Sefa and Cecilia Francis won the gold and silver in a time of 11.87s and 11.98s respectively The bronze medal was won by Pesse Prenom of Togo in 12.25s.

Nigeria increased its tally to third gold of the day when Oduduru Ejowvokogbhene Divine returned 10.62s relegating Atsibeha Ammanuel Abeb of Ethiopia who returned in 10.86s while Yusuf Ismaila Adedeji of Nigeria came third in a time of 10.87s.

Oshinbanjo Rebecca Temidayo and Ademosu Aderonke Adedolapo from Nigeria won silver and bronze medal respectively in the 100m hurdles which was won by Lina Omar Gaber of Egypt with the time of 14.04s.

Egypt’s second gold of the day was won in the long jump girls event. Esraa Mohammed Samir Owis of Egypt jumped 5.63m to win the gold, while Abire Mercy and Amusa Oluwatobiloba Ayomide of Nigeria settled for the silver and bronze with 5.63m and 5.52m respectively.

In the 800m race, Aliyi Zeyituna Mohammed and Olti Durets Edau from Ethiopia won the gold and silver while ASsamu Oluwatobi Esther from Nigeria with a time of 2.06.04s, won the bronze medal.

The Gambia claimed its first gold in the 400m race when Tijani Keita 47.39s was good enough to outrun Gabiso Gabra Galcha from Ethiopia in 47.75s while Nathaniel Samson Oghenewegba claimed the bronze medal with a time of 47.89s.

Nigeria now has five gold, four silver and five bronze medals while Egypt has three gold, one silver to its credit. - Nigerian Tribune
