Edward Brown

The adage “Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see,” is proving itself to be more relevant each day.

Forty-five-year-old Edward Brown of Sommerville, SC is facing prison time and a misdemeanor for forging divorce documents to trick his girlfriend into believing he’d divorced his second wife. Brown was charged with one count of forgery on Friday by South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents. Investigators say Brown obtained a copy of his divorce documents from his first marriage and changed names, date, and the case number via scanning the document into his computer. According to SLED, Brown then mailed the paperwork to his girlfriend and told her that it was real.

SLED agents say the use of the forged documents took place between August 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013. The charge is a misdemeanor and carries a penalty of up to three years in prison and/or a fine. Brown was being held in the Dorchester County jail. The First Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case.

According to eHow.com, someone who forges divorce documents can face a number of penalties. One of these penalties centers on the division of assets and debts accumulated during the marriage. According to Emily Doskow, who authored a number of books about the divorce process, a judge can either reduce the property awarded or he or she can increase the amount of debt assigned. A monetary penalty can be imposed, depending upon the extent of the misrepresentation and the impact the misconduct had on the case. A judge can hold the guilty party in contempt of court, meaning that the judge possesses significant latitude to take additional steps against that person and impose any number of sanctions, from a fine to a jail sentence.
