Woman Seeks Divorce Over Rape By Husband

A woman named Charity John has sought the dissolution of her marriage to husband Abel over continuous rape by him.

She told a Customary Court sitting in Jikwoyi, Abuja, on Wednesday, that she can no longer endure being raped by her husband.

John also accused her husband of adultery.

In a divorce petition, the woman said, “My husband is fond of raping me. I have endured this for a long time.”

However, denying the allegation including engaging in adultery, Abel accused his wife of cheating on him with a man based in China. 

He said, “Everything she said is not true. I can’t rape my wife. I am not a womaniser. Instead, it is my wife that has been cheating on me.

“In May 2017 while she was in the bathroom, I saw a text message on her phone. She has been discussing with a man based in China.

“They have agreed to marry. She told the man that she is not married, that the man she is living with is her brother.

“When I confronted her, she collected the phone from me and smashed it on the floor. I am tired of the marriage.” 

Abel consented to the dissolution of the marriage and also said he will accept custody of the two children the union produced.

Presiding Judge, Jemilu Jega, adjourned the case until August 26 for judgment.
